How I Became a Veggie Head & Raw-at-Heart

So how does a meat-eating local girl from the islands becoming a veggie head & raw-at-heart? Well this is my brief story mostly to share tips with those of you interested in exploring new territory in your eating adventures. Again I’m just a newbie but since you asked here I go – the first part is my backstory into becoming a vegetarian & then exploring raw living foods, and the second part (which you can so just jump too) is practical tips/ideas/references.

thnx to TopMomBlog.com for this pic of my fav raw dish ever from www.Aulac.com

So I’ve always loved animals!
As a kid, I had a dog named Prince, 10 guinea pigs named Stardust, Moonglow, Comet & more plus a nameless mynah bird, and yet there was always this disconnect that the food I ate used to be living, breathing critters once.
On a trip to Philippines I even got to witness my Gramps & other relatives slay our dinner – a piggy & a goat crying on the side knowing he was next. I had to carry the pig’s head in a big silver bowl to my Grandma. Can you believe by the time it was cooked & served all pretty on the dining room table, I conveniently forgot all about the slaying part & dug into the delicious pork adobo dish?! [disclaimer: this is so about my own personal experience, not a judgment on meat-eaters or veggie heads]

As I’ve grow in my own spiritual practice & my knowing in the oneness of all life, I’ve always wanted to be vegetarian but knew I would not undertake that switch until it could be done with grace, peace & all that good stuff.
What’s the point of becoming a vegetarian or making any big change if it’s done with negativity, judgment, stifling rigidity & all that not so fun stuff? So I patiently waited for that perfect moment to present itself & it did in Jan 2009.

Somehow I started the year not eating any meat, not as a conscious decision or anything, it just happened that way.
I love the mystery/synchronicity of the internet – it’s certainly been a big part of some of the most life-changing connections I’ve had in my life (that’ll be another story). Anyway, on a website or email somewhere I read about something called The World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle http://worldpeacediet.org. The title intrigued me deeply while my more shallow sarcastic side said “C’mon a world peace diet? What a cheesy concept? Puhleeeeze!” The lil’ kid in me always open to possibility won out the skeptic & I downloaded the eBook & began reading it. Did you know all these folks were vegetarian: Pythagoras, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi (hey where are all the ladies)? Also one of the lines I liked from the World Peace Diet “It’s funny how we want transformation without having to change.

It’s been a while now since I read it but I do remember feeling pummeled by loads of information as the book continued.
Sometimes I felt angst maybe even anger coming from the author why we NEED to be vegetarian. However within this heavy-handed commentary on the seeming wrongs of being a meat-eater, some insights that I resonated with began to emerge. Ideas like…

  • the disconnect between living breathing animals we see & appreciate out there, and the chicken mcnugget on our plate that we take in here (I’m pointing at my belly)
  • the way we unconsciously move through this beautiful act we call eating/feeding our body necessary nutrients & “fuel” to do all that we do in life (we eat on the run, don’t make time to acknowledge/appreciate the food, etc.)
  • the environmental, spiritual, physical, even emotional impact of eating animals

It also reminded me of a related aha moment that happened at a HUB event in late 2008 One of the speakers/HUB member Michael Beckwith said we do not love in general, we love in specific
meaning if I say I am loving or I am peaceful, then this should be reflected in all areas of my life, including my dinner plate. I finally realized my own personal disconnect. I had written songs on peace, a whole album about my passion for living everyday peace & sharing this message - knowing this is truly the only way our planet will experience true peace, one person at a time. And yet here I was eating everyday, unconscious of or maybe in denial of what it takes to get some yummy sushi or my island fav, kalbi (Korean short ribs) on my plate. It’s not to say that there are not more conscious/sacred ways that cultures have approached getting their meat, but let’s face it – most if not all the of the meat we consume come to us from factories/companies whose main focus is not on health & wholeness for consumers or the animals. If that were the case, I might have to re-consider this whole vegetarian thing. Honestly it is not set in stone for me. This might sound silly, but I have even questioned eating plants or any living thing. So that would leave me with air & I think there actually are breatharians(?) – let’s not go there :)

Let’s just say I felt compelled to bring my eating into alignment with my core values. So that’s how I became vegetarian & I did it cold turkey - except for one slip up in January when I was starving after a Sunday church gig & ate some pasta at a farmer’s market & didn’t know there was meat in it. Thank God for my hubbby, Nolan, who said, “Don’t freak out honey. You didn’t know.” So that’s been my mantra around being vegetarian: not to freak out, not to have it be some rigid thing in my mind and yet another thing to judge myself by. With this more graceful approach, I’ve never gone back to meat.

By Feb 2009, I don’t remember what exactly brought me to eating raw foods (probably an article/ website online), but Nolan & I signed up to receive a week’s worth of raw vegan foods from www.Rawvolution.com to give it a shot. We committed to doing it for two weeks, so this meant no meats of any kind, no dairy or eggs, and all uncooked, unprocessed & organic veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. I continued into a 3rd week at about 90% raw. This experience surely helped me to commit to a vegetarian lifestyle. It was challenging given that even salads were not a common part of our diet. I must say it was a joyfest for my tastebuds – so much that it was sometimes overload for me because of all the different flavors I had never experienced before & the intensity of those flavors. In that short time we experienced superhero nail strength, energy boost & I noticed my hands were not shaky as they always had been. In fact I didn’t really know my hands were shaky until I recognized how stable they were after going raw. Plus of course about 5-6lbs of weightloss.

For Lent this year (2010), inspired by Nolan, we committed to 46 days of raw vegan living foods. During that time we found soooo many more awesome raw food choices, restaurants, snacks & so on. Some folks may love the bold, hard-core nature of a Rawvolution menu, but for us to make it through what we thought was going to be a long-ass time J, we sought out all the yummiest raw foods we could find which is what led to my list of favs below. I’ll also include references to other websites & folks that have a way deeper understanding of raw food & that can answer all your questions.

We did not experience the same superhero nail strength like before, but here were other experiences we had:

  • feeling lighter (in all ways)
  • more connected with life & nature
  • great weight-loss (Nolan 15lbs, me 12lbs)
  • more energy for me
  • my complexion was more smooth & clear (I’ve had acne since I was a kid)
  • our skin felt baby smooth all over (even like our heels & elbows)
  • less energy & more sleepy for Nolan at times
  • de-tox at the ending for Nolan
  • certainly more awareness/appreciation for food, eating & our bodies
  • time slowed down, felt more flowy & relaxed

So on Easter we completed our 46 day raw adventure & the funny thing is the hardest part for me was that final day, dreading my old life or old mental battles around food thinking should I eat that? I could, but do I? & blah blah blah. Driven by my old-school mentality of “let’s party” & “celebrate” because we did accomplish 46 days raw, I had a not so good pasta dish, then a soy chai latte at the airport in Calgary & ended with a veggie Papa John’s pizza at night in Long Beach. My body rebelled & I was down for two days with a froggy voice, congestion & the yuckies.

The bottom line for me is: what I think, how I feel & what I believe around my food choices is as important as the actual food choices.

I remain a veggie-head & raw-at-heart with about an 80% raw diet. The sweetest thing is my mind is in agreement & above all, I’ve committed to having peace, grace & even fun be a part of my experience around food. This keeps the tummy & the soul happy!

Peaceful eating to you…make time to enjoy, celebrate & appreciate the foods that fuel our vibrant lives :)

Dare to Suck in 2009!

Aloooooha!

And welcome to 2009, what Oprah's been calling & I'm believing will be & is the best year of our lives! Why? Because it's still unwritten & that means all the possibilities are right there at our fingertips.

Truth be told, my hubby & I, have not been the most productive folks on the planet this new year but we have seen about a million episodes of Monk (Nolan's new-found tv fav) during the Monk marathon. Sometimes you feel such a draw, a magnetized urge to do & be these great things, yet thinking of the "how" lands your butt right back on the couch - at least that's where our butts ended up, but not for long...

As I looked back, I saw clearly that every cool thing (from my career to my home to the emmy & joy & fun) has come when I surrendered myself to what matters most to me - service & spiritual practice. So as a start, I picked up the phone & made those calls to re-connect with others, volunteered my music gifts, started doing morning yoga/meditation with Nolan and signed-up for a weekly meditation class at Agape.

Well I'm happy to report that the "how" has started to show up...the resources, the contacts, the creativity, the seed money to launch my newest project:
NYNE ~ New You, New Earth An interactive, multi-media, community building concert which I hope y'all will co-create with me this year (more details to coming soon).

Fear has always been my buddy, and he/she is my buddy because every time I get that nervous feeling, I know I'm about to stretch big-time! So as some great teacher said to a friend...DARE TO SUCK!

Yes, dare to flop this year - in fact, lots of times, because that means you're exercising your greatness! You risk the flop for that big AHA that not only expands who you are but by default expands the world & the people around you!

Now imagine when a group of like-minded, darers to suck, gather & act on a vision - it's powerful, it's world transforming!

I really feel that's why I have been drawn to these amazing conscious community-building events/projects that I truly hope you will be a part of this year as well :)

See you & your bright shiny self and remember, YOU really are the most important attendee to each of these amazing events below!

Big happy, grateful hugs,

Faith

Spread Holiday Cheer to Families in Need (Los Angeles, Maui, & Portland)

BEAUTIFUL BROWN FAMILY (Los Angeles, CA)

In May 2008, we had the opportunity to help a homeless family in the L.A. area: the beautiful Brown family with Quentin, Anita & their 4 teenagers (Shannon, Mary, Raven, & Quentin). I told them on-stage that they are not alone & that we would be here to help (see the videos here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkHRJ92ob_w) Months later, they remain the same upbeat & hopeful family, and still no home & many challenges. The good news is Quentin has a job now as a security guard at nights working Fri-Tues. Anita, who was a nurses assistant (I think) is still seeking work. They’re temporarily staying with a relative in Los Angeles and are waiting to hear on an apartment, but no luck yet on the home-front after months of looking.

It remains to be a growing experience for all of us & Nolan & I are committed to be there for them and share their story with you, so together we can support them in creating a better life.

If you have resources or gifts please call Quentin at (562) 704-7093 and you can mail to:
Quentin Brown
2725 W. 54th St.
Los Angeles, CA 90043

Keep in mind that Quentin has limited cell minutes and also if offering a job to Anita or the kids, remember they only have one van for transportation.

The Browns are in need of:

**Three Bedroom home/apt for $1200-$1300 (in the southern CA area, close enough so Quentin can drive or take the train to work in Los Angeles)
**Gas cards for the Van
**Van maintenance/repair
**Gift Cards for Groceries
**Part-time work for their teenagers (need holiday help???)

KARYNE CIMONE - Best Choreographer Ever (Kahului, Maui)

In '96 I debuted my first album, In Search of Faith, with gorgeous dancers, slammin' choreography & a head-set & all for me - I was doing the Janet Jackson/Madonna thing. Karyne Cimone was the choreographer that brought my music to life through powerful dance & movement. Since then, she has moved to Maui with her sweet hubby, Gino & 3-yr old daughter, Kanani. We've recently connected & I'm looking forward to collaborating with her on future projects because I just LOVE her choreography & the spirituality that flows through her work. As always, she is vibrant with creativity, music & dance and is now looking to work specifically with youth on the island. Karyne has soooo much to share with the world, but like many families now, they are struggling to make ends meet & they are in need of kokua (loving help & support). Specifically they need:

**Dining room table & chairs
**Bed for her & Gino, bed for Kanani
**Financial Support (for gas, groceries, pay for the registration of her car, etc.)
**Guitar (for Karyne to learn to play songs for her ministry with the toddlers/youth)

Please email me at faithgroover@hotmail.com if you live on the island and have any of this for them, or would like to donate - I'll forward you their current address.

A Bigger God

(this is my submission to http://charterforcompassion.com - submit your own story)

I grew up in the Catholic tradition & really experienced my faith through music as I played piano & sang for all the masses at my all-girls Catholic school in Hawaii. I remember one day as a teenager when I found out one of the girls in my rock band was not Catholic. In fact, she did not go to any church at all. This totally confused me since I thought she & her parents were some of the coolest people in the world AND they did not practice any religion. Or another time, I remember in class once, it made no sense to me why folks, who for example lived in a remote jungle, somewhere, and did not hear the cluster of letters that spelled J-e-s-u-s, were condemned for all eternity. I knew then that there were limits to my current religion or belief system, that did not sit right with my heart. I just knew that God & we are bigger than that…right?

I am happy to say that my spiritual seeking has led me to the New Thought/Ancient Wisdom teachings found in Unity principles (www.unity.org) and Religious Science or Science of Mind (www.religiousscience.org). The first time an artist friend asked me to sub for him to do the music at a Religious Science church, I thought it was so weird that they were meditating (though now that is a part of my daily practice). It really got me though when they began to read from the bible, then the Koran, then poetry by Maya Angelou, then ancient Buddhist text & a diversity of resources that shared inclusive, empowering wisdom. I had found a belief system & a compassionate community that celebrates & honors all faiths & all peoples, including those that don’t practice a specific religion. I am so grateful that in the New Thought/Ancient Wisdom teachings there is no lid on the box of God, in fact there is no box & we are constantly challenged to live & practice with spiritually open arms.

This is the new world we are co-creating & it begins by keeping that lid open, so we can ask if our current beliefs serve us and where we want to go. By continually asking, allowing, & opening to a bigger God or idea of life, we cannot help but grow as individuals while uplifting & embracing the planet as a whole. We are called not only to compassion but to celebration as well – celebration in the diversity of our beliefs, cultures, & religions.

Here is an amazing song about a "Bigger God" by Peter Mayer that I recently recorded:
You can hear it on the jukebox at www.faithrivera.com/fr/Home.html

These Are Rich Times! Really!

Yeah, I’m from planet earth.

I know gas prices have sky-rocketed & the stock market has plummeted.
Diabetes is on the rise. Real estate is taking a dive. War rages on while our natural resources are coming to an end. And this is just 30min worth of news.

So it looks bleak & feels even bleaker, but let me burst your pessimist bubble - there is more than a silver-lining here.
There is a world rich with love, joy, peace, & abundance for all that is bubbling to erupt and it is your life lived anew that will be the solution – that IS the solution.

Up till now, we’ve collectively & somewhat unconsciously boogied our way to this scenario with our current thoughts, beliefs & resulting practices. This is the world that competition, power over others, “dog eat dog” & “every man for himself” thinking have resulted in. This is not shared for finger-wagging, blame sake, or for guilt – for those things serve no one and really, they’re no fun. It is simply shared as an observation that can point us to experiencing a richer, more intentional, connected way of being in the world together.

Like when you put that rich, gooey, stinky, nutritional pile of compost on your plants – that’s the rich time I’m talking about! So there’s a lot of &$%# going on.
Good! So much #$%& that you canNOT ignore it. Good! It means that time is prime for us to change our groove, choose another tune, & dance to something better!

How, you ask?

Well it is not going to be dependent upon which dude is gonna make it to the White House. It is not going to be up to the news you watch, your neighbors, your boss, your family or even your God. This is the richest time ever because the pruning, the watering, the care is all about you & the thoughts, feelings, & beliefs that you hold about the world. It may sound airy fairy to you, but you can’t deny that every action you have ever taken or not taken, conscious or unconscious, has been driven by your underlying beliefs about the world, others & yourself.

What if when you stepped out your door in the morning you knew that life supported you, that there is enough for everyone, that love IS the answer, and that every stranger is a friend-in-the-making? Your day would be different – I promise you, and not because the things, people & circumstances of your day would change (although that could happen too), but because you experience it all so differently.

This is the start of a rich, new world & it starts with us being open to taking a different kind of step outside our door today – the kind of step that embraces the ideas of gratitude, wonder, love, & riches that surprise us at every corner. When we look for it, we will find it. This new world starts with a new you, a new me & it will take daily practice, courage to release those beliefs that don’t serve us anymore, and lots of laughter to lighten the feel of…the compost, shall we say.

Here are some TIPS & RESOURCES for bringing on these Rich Times:
